Feelings And Emotions

Our feelings and emotions sometimes feel good while they are deceiving us, leading us astray and harming us. Mine did. For instance, before I was saved I smoked. The nicotine made me feel good while it was damaging my lungs and arteries. I have limited lung capacity and I have coronary artery disease. I am thankful that the Lord helped me to quit smoking shortly before I got saved. Roughly 1 out of 5 deaths from heart disease is directly related to smoking. People who smoke are two to four times more likely to get heart disease. Before I was saved I drank alcohol. It made me feel emotionally happy while it clouded my judgment and distorted reality. I did things I would never have done when I was sober. It was only by the grace of God that before I was saved I did not get in a bad car accident while drinking.

Ephesians 5:18: And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;

It is relevant that God includes drunkenness and the Holy Spirit in the same verse. They have opposite effects. Drunkenness has harmful effects and the Holy Spirit has wonderful effects. There is never too much of the Holy Spirit*s influence and it is always positive and wonderful. People get into a lot of trouble and have a lot of problems when they are drunk. In 2012, 31% of car accident deaths involved individuals driving under the influence of alcohol. Drinking also increases the risk of committing violent offenses. Roughly 40 percent of inmates who are incarcerated for violent offenses were under the influence of alcohol during the time of their crime. Good feelings about ourselves without Christ in our hearts can be deceptive. The most important thing they can deceive us about is that we are not sinners and do not need the Lord Jesus, His forgiveness and the better feelings and emotions He provides. He is the only source of them.

When God gives us good feelings and emotions they are based on facts. He gives right reasons for good feelings and emotions. Consider the blessed feeling and emotion of peace. The Bible speaks of the peace with God and the peace of God. Horst Adler defined the difference. Peace with God means He will never condemn us or send us to Hell. We won*t necessarily feel that peace. But when God gives us His peace in our hearts that can often feel wonderful. And the feelings and emotions God gives us will bless us and will never harm us in any way.

Romans 5:1: Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:

Romans 14:17: For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.

Romans 15:13: Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.

1 Corinthians 14:33: For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.

Philippians 4:7: And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Colossians 3:15: And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.

2 Peter 1:2: Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord,

Psalms 29:11: The LORD will give strength unto his people; the LORD will bless his people with peace.

Those who have no relationship with Christ have none of His satisfying peace. That was certainly the case with me. When we receive Jesus into our hearts we are given the Holy Spirit. He provides feelings and emotions that are far superior to anything I ever felt before I was saved.

Galatians 5:22: But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
